Feeding Instructions

Using Peanuts in Various Feeders:

Tube Feeders: These are ideal for peanut kernels. Choose a feeder with mesh that allows birds to peck at the peanuts without removing whole nuts, which ensures the feed lasts longer and is accessible to smaller birds.

Mesh Feeders: Also known as peanut wreaths or balls, these feeders hold whole peanuts and are excellent for attracting larger birds like woodpeckers and jays that can cling and feed directly from the mesh.

Tray Feeders: For an easy feeding solution, spread a handful of peanuts on a tray feeder. This type is especially good for attracting a wide variety of birds, though it may also attract squirrels.

Window Feeders: Attach a small feeder to your window with suction cups. Fill it with shelled peanuts to enjoy up-close birdwatching. This setup typically attracts titmice, finches, and even cardinals.

Tips on Best Placement for Feeders:

Visibility: Place feeders in locations where they are easily visible to birds. An open spot near a tree or shrub offers quick refuge to birds from predators but is open enough to spot the feeder easily.

Height: Most feeders work best when hung at a height of about 5 feet off the ground. This level mimics the height of small branches, making it a natural feeding height for many birds.

Shelter: Position feeders near natural shelter such as bushes or trees. This provides birds with a safe place to flee in case of danger and makes them feel secure enough to return regularly.

Away from Windows: To prevent collisions, place feeders either less than 3 feet from a window or more than 30 feet away. This reduces the risk of birds injuring themselves by flying into windows.

Sun and Wind: Consider the prevailing winds and the path of the sun throughout the day. Feeders should be placed where they will be sheltered from strong winds and not directly in intense afternoon sunlight, which can spoil the peanuts more quickly.

Regular Cleaning: To prevent the spread of disease and to keep feeders attractive to birds, clean them at least once every two weeks. Use a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water, rinse well, and dry thoroughly before refilling.

By following these detailed instructions, you can ensure that your garden becomes a favourite spot for local birds, providing them with a safe and nutritious feeding environment.
